Jeffco Schools is not disclosing how much the district will lose on the Emory Elementary deal. And curiously, no one knows when the Board met or voted on selling the closed school.
Lakewood Informer reached out to school officials and could find NOTHING. How is Lakewood selling the property when the purchase has not been completed through Jeffco? Has it been completed and everyone missed it?
News page from Jeffco Schools
As of October 2, 2025, the last information about Emory on the school website was a notice that Lakewood would be discussing purchasing the school at their April meeting. This was not a school board meeting. There was no public discussion with school board members, although school board members were present at Lakewood’s meeting.
Email from Jeffco schools dated 9/18/2025 denying disclosure of a market value appraisal of Emory Elementary
Lakewood Informer news asked for the market appraisal of the school. Lakewood has already disclosed that negotiations for the property are complete for a sale price of $4 million. Since negotiations are over, there is no leverage left to protect.
Nevertheless, Jeffco refused to provide the information, citing negotiation privileges.
This is not to protect negotiations. The only reason left is to save face for the school district that is throwing away millions of dollars.
Email received 9/18/2024 from Jeffco in response to a CORA request
A CORA request to the school for the latest information and the sale contract was met with no documents at all.
School staff said to find responsive documents yourself on the website. Not exactly adhering to the letter of the law by providing documents themselves, or even being helpful and pointing to an exact page with information.
Email dated 9/24/25 denying ability to answer questions
Finally, we reached out to Director Paula Reed, the School Board Member representing the Emory elementary area. We asked:
“Can you say why the district is claiming they can’t release the market value of the property due to negotiations when Lakewood has already disclosed the $4 million sale price? Negotiations are over.
Will the district disclose how much money it is losing on this deal?”
Director Reed claimed she couldn’t answer these questions and they should be submitted through CORA.
CORA does not answer questions. It is only to provide documents. Does Director Reed make a habit of not answering questions from any of her constituents or only on certain topics?
From somewhere on the Jeffco School Board website
Taxpayers may never know exactly how much they are losing in this deal with the Action Center.
Curiously, as of the end of September, Lakewood Informer received this screenshot from a reader showing a study session has been scheduled for THE DAY AFTER ELECTIONS to discuss Emory. This date is also AFTER Lakewood is scheduled to sell the property they may or may not already own. The study session will not be a time for the school board to vote on this issue.
